How it counts
Characters are counted the way you see them. An emoji, a flag or an accented letter is one character, even though a computer may store it as several. Spaces and line breaks count as characters. "Without spaces" leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.

Common questions
Why does my SMS split into two messages early?
A normal SMS holds 160 plain characters. One emoji or some accented letters switch the whole message to a different encoding that holds only 70. Long messages are split into parts of 153 (or 67) characters each.
Are Google's title and description limits exact?
No. Google cuts them off by screen width in pixels, not by a set number of characters. The numbers here are safe guides.
