How to use it
Add one row per subject with its units (credits) and the grade you got. Use whatever scale your school uses. The average is weighted, so a 5-unit subject counts more than a 2-unit one.
The formula
GWA = (units₁ × grade₁ + units₂ × grade₂ + …) ÷ total units
Example: 3 units at 1.75, 3 units at 1.5, 4 units at 2.0. (5.25 + 4.5 + 8.0) ÷ 10 = 1.775.
Grading scales
Many Philippine colleges use 1.0 as the highest grade and 3.0 as the lowest passing grade. 5.0 is a failing grade. Schools in the United States use a 4.0 scale, where 4.0 is the highest. The formula is the same either way. Only the meaning of "good" flips.
Common questions
What GWA do I need for Latin honors?
It depends on the school. A common pattern on the 1.0 scale is summa cum laude at 1.0 to 1.2, magna cum laude at 1.21 to 1.45, and cum laude at 1.46 to 1.75. Many schools also require no failing or dropped subjects. Check your student handbook.
Do I include PE and NSTP?
Many schools leave them out of the GWA for honors. Some count them. Follow your school's rule.
Can I convert a GWA to a percentage?
Only with your school's own conversion table. There is no single national one.
